What is an Oral Cancer Screening?

At Camp Creek Dental, we include oral cancer screenings as a routine part of all of our dental exams. By following routine visits with your dental regimen, you may increase your chances for early detection of cancerous or pre-cancerous conditions.

During the screening, we carefully examine the inside of your mouth and tongue. Oral Cancer can affect any area of the oral cavity including the lips, gum tissue, check lining, tongue and the hard or soft palate so we screen for all of these areas.

Oral Cancer most often occurs in those who use tobacco in any form such as chewing tobacco and smoking cigarettes. If you use tobacco in any form, please inform our staff so we can include this as a part of your customized treatment plan for regular visits.

What Symptoms Should I Look For?

It’s very difficult to detect any signs of Oral Cancer on your own. However, it can be spotted by a very small, but dangerous, oral spot or sore and not be aware of it.

Other symptoms include:

  • A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal
  • A color change of the oral tissues
  • A lump, thickening, rough spot, or crust
  • Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue.

At Camp Creek Dental, if we see any symptoms, we typically notice a spot or sore that looks harmless and does not have a clear cause. When necessary, we perform a simple brush test to collect cells from the area and these cells are sent to a laboratory for further analysis.
