What is a Root Canal?

You’ve probably heard the term “root canal” before. And if so, a root canal is a common procedure in adults. Root canal therapy is a treatment used to either repair or save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Why Would I Need to Get a Root Canal?

Prolonging root canal therapy is not ideal. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and an abscess may form. Abscesses may lead to serious issues that affect one’s overall health.

What are the Symptoms?

In many cases, you may not even realize that you need a root canal because no symptoms may be present.

Symptoms you may experience include:

  • Severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure
  • Sensitivity or pain to hot and cold foods (for a prolonged period of time)
  • Discoloration, or darkening, of the tooth
  • Tenderness or swelling in the gums surrounding the tooth
  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums
